British Citizenship Priority Service: cost, processing time & how it works

Contents

A new UK nationality Priority Service for British citizenship applications was introduced on 20 July 2026.

The service allows eligible applicants to pay an additional £500 for priority processing. The Home Office says priority applications should normally receive a decision within 30 working days from biometric submission.

This is significantly faster than the standard citizenship service level of six months.

However, paying the Priority Service fee does not guarantee a decision within 30 working days. Applications requiring additional checks or enhanced scrutiny can take longer.

What is the British citizenship Priority Service?

The British citizenship Priority Service is an optional fast-track service for eligible nationality applications made from within the UK.

It is designed for applicants who want their application considered more quickly than under the standard service. The underlying requirements for British citizenship remain exactly the same whether you use the standard or Priority Service.

The key difference is the processing timeframe, not the eligibility requirements or the likelihood of approval.

How much does the Priority Service cost?

The Priority Service costs an additional £500, on top of the standard British citizenship application fee.

This is a fee for priority processing.

How quickly will I get a decision?

The Home Office says priority citizenship applications should normally receive a decision within 30 working days from the date you submit your biometrics.

This means the 30-working-day period does not simply begin when you complete the online application. You need to complete the required biometric process before the priority processing timeframe begins.

The standard service level remains six months.

However, 30 working days is not a guaranteed deadline. The Home Office may need additional time if your application requires further enquiries or checks.

Can I pay to upgrade an application I’ve already submitted?

No.

If you have already submitted your British citizenship application using the standard service, you cannot subsequently pay £500 to upgrade it to the Priority Service.

The Priority Service needs to be selected when making the application.

This is particularly important if you have a deadline and are relying on a faster decision.

Can a Priority Service application take longer than 30 working days?

Yes.

The Home Office recognises that some applications cannot be processed within the normal priority timeframe.

This can include cases requiring:

  • Enhanced scrutiny
  • External checks
  • Identity enquiries
  • National security checks
  • More complex consideration of the application

In these circumstances, the Home Office may need longer than 30 working days to reach a decision.

The £500 fee therefore gives you access to priority processing, but it does not guarantee that your particular application will be decided within six weeks.

Does Priority Service improve my chances of becoming British?

No.

Priority processing does not give you a better chance of approval.

The same British citizenship requirements apply whether you use the standard or Priority Service. The Home Office will still consider your eligibility, supporting evidence, residence history, absences, good character and other relevant requirements.

The benefit of Priority Service is speed, not a more favourable assessment.

Is the British citizenship Priority Service worth £500?

This will depend on your circumstances.

If you have no particular reason to obtain a decision quickly, you may decide that the additional £500 is not worthwhile.

However, priority processing may be attractive if you have an important upcoming deadline involving travel, employment, family circumstances or another reason why confirmation of your British citizenship is time-sensitive.

There is another important consideration.

Before paying £500 for priority processing, you should be confident that your citizenship application is ready to submit.

A faster decision is of limited benefit if the application contains an issue that results in additional enquiries or delays.

Potential issues involving your residence history, absences from the UK, good character, previous immigration history or supporting evidence should be considered before submission rather than after the application is already in the Home Office system.

If you are unsure whether your application is straightforward, professional advice before submitting can help you identify potential problems and decide whether Priority Service is appropriate.

Not sure whether your British citizenship application is ready to submit?

Before paying the additional £500 for Priority Service, make sure there are no issues with your eligibility, residence history or supporting evidence that could lead to delays.

Speak to an IAA-regulated UK immigration lawyer about your application before you submit it.

Should I use Priority Service if my case is complicated?

Not necessarily.

Priority Service does not make a complicated application simpler. If the Home Office needs additional information or checks, the application may still take longer than 30 working days.

For this reason, the decision to use Priority Service should be considered separately from the question of whether you are ready to apply for British citizenship.

If there are potential issues with your eligibility or evidence, it can be more important to address those issues before submitting the application than simply paying for faster processing.

What happens after my citizenship application is approved?

A successful citizenship application does not automatically give you a British passport.

If you are required to attend a citizenship ceremony, you become a British citizen at the ceremony when you make the required oath or affirmation and pledge.

You can then apply separately for your British passport.

The Priority Service therefore relates to the citizenship application decision. It does not provide faster passport processing.
