The Home Office introduced a new set of rules for UK visitor visas. The rules came into effect on 24 April 2015 and are set out in Appendix V of the UK immigration rules.

The changes mean that there are now just 4 routes under the visitor visa category instead of the previous 15. This will simplify the process and make it easier to choose the correct route to apply for when making an application. The new routes are:

  • Standard visitor visa
  • Visitor visa for marriage or civil partnership
  • Visitor visa for permitted paid engagements
  • Transit visitor visa

The new changes will as mean that under the standard visitor visa category applicants will be able to undertake activities that were previously received for business visas such as partaking in meetings, sales and training.

The student visitor route will has also been rebranded into a new short-term study route for those whose main purpose is to study short courses. There have been no changes to the entry requirements for these people.
